Let's squat!

Logic passage: small country -> lack of space -> high market prices

According to Wikipedia, "squatting" is "is the act of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space".
Nederland's laws allows people to squat the house if they are empty for more than one year.
It's a push for buildings' owners to use them, and a disincentive for speculation (companies buying many buildings
when prices are lower, to resell them when prices get higher).

According to Wikipedia's definition, squatting has rather a positive social behavior than a negative meaning.
If I try to picture an abandoned house, I always get to think at a crappy building, with plants growing everywhere, wet walls, ugly facade, broken glasses... dark buildings by night that are refugee for druggies (and criminality related to drug dependencies).
That's how I see it.

So, the other day I've been with Merijn, (a girl working in our office), and other ~40 people, entering one of these buildings, right in downtown in Utrecht.
It's a three stores house, facing the main canal.
The building has been left empty for several years, and has an history of three other squatting.
Since the last eviction, it has been left empy for one year and an half.

But the squatting attempt ("attempt" as you will read later on), has also another reason.
Seems like the Dutch government is about to modify the law about squatting in favor of buildings'owners.
That's why many squatting groups are intensifing their action, nowadays.

So, the question is, why the government is doing that?
Is there an interest in preserving the right of property, at any cost?
Is there a social interest in allowing owners to leave the buildings empty?
Is it good for people, to allow speculation over building, which lead to an increasing of houses prices?

I think these questions should be really considered when thinking about positive and negative aspects of incentive or disincentive squatting.

So the other day we entered... few persons have been staying there until then.
Well... there were some talking with local government spokpersons and police... I don't know exactly the whole story... but it ended up they kicked them out of the house, took off the banner and put a new nice advertisment on the facade.
So now the house is empty again, rusting and falling apart, until it will be so shitty the owner will be able to tear it down without have to pay any tax (that's how they told me it works here), so he will be able to sell/use the ground for a new building (for a lot of money).
